Hybrid M12 circular connectors in Y-coding

HARTING has expanded its M12 product line – presenting innovative new hybrid mating faces. The new cable connectors and panel feed throughs with crimp termination comply with the mating face type 4 from the product standard IEC 61076-2-113. Due to its appearance, this mating face is also described as Y-coding. It sensibly combines the transmission of both power and data.

As a manufacturer for industrial connectivity, HARTING offers a wide range of circular connectors for the M8, M12, M17, M23 and 7/8" series. Typical applications for circular connectors include sensors, drives and converters, network components and operating controls. Circular connectors of all sizes provide a well-protected connection for all the industrial lifelines of power, signals and data.  The portfolio includes PCB connectors, panel feed throughs, cable connectors that can be assembled on-site, and ready-to-use cable assemblies. Regardless of whether you are a device developer or an installer, HARTING offers the perfect connection for any application in a harsh industrial environment. The hybrid Y-coded M12 interface expands this portfolio with a future-oriented solution that combines two lifelines in a space-saving way.

Different coding for the circular connectors

The mating faces of the circular connectors are coded to prevent improper connections. It is integrated into the inner shape of the insulation bodies. The coding always ensures a matching pair of two insulation bodies: once as a female (socket) variant and once as a male (pin) variant. (Commonly referred to as the male & female circular connectors)

The M8 and M12 circular connectors have coding variants that look like letters; these distinguish them for the corresponding application.

The Y-coding is a hybrid mating face for M12 circular connectors with four data and four power contacts. Data transmission is comparable with the D-coding. Power transmission is comparable with the M12 A-coding.

M12 Y-coded connectors are used for I/O boxes and network components for Fieldbus and EtherCAT. Power and Fast Ethernet data or signals can be transmitted with one space-saving connector when using the hybrid M12 Y-coded connectors. The metal shield in the shape of a Y is a reliable barrier between the data communications and power transmission.

Previously, two separate M12 interfaces were required to transmit data and power. This is no longer necessary – thanks to the hybrid M12 Y-coded connector. Y-coding provides the user with an interface that simultaneously transmits power and Ethernet data through a single connection.

To sum things up:
One device interface instead of two – simultaneous transmission of power and data via Y-coding provides device developers with a space-saving alternative. This effectively supports the trend towards miniaturisation. The reduction to a single device interface saves both space and resources, thus actively contributing to cost reduction and sustainability.
