What is Single Pair Ethernet?

AQ: How Industrial Single Pair Ethernet Will Enable Barrier-Free Communication from Cloud to Sensor

Single Pair Ethernet Explained

Single Pair Ethernet communicates across the common industrial Ethernet protocols available today (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, EtherCAT, etc.) but instead of using 4 or 8 total wires, it accomplishes communication across just two wires, a single twister pair. Also, it is utilizing Power over Data Line (PoDL) technology to not only bring communication to the device, but also the voltage and amperage needed to power the device itself.

Benefits of SPE

What are the Benefits of Single Pair Ethernet?

  • Space and number of connections are reduced on the device.
  • The need for an external power supply is eliminated.
  • Devices on the plant floor that have traditionally communicated over Fieldbus protocols can now join the same IP-based network that the rest of the devices on the network are using. This enables peer-to-peer communication, open-loop feedback of all devices, and smart functionality all the way from the main control room down to the individual device.

What are the Advantages of Single Pair Ethernet?

  • Transmission speeds from 10Mbit/s to 1GBit/s
  • Simplified cabling saves space and weight
  • Saves time when setting up, maintaining and operating industrial networks
  • Power supply and better reliability of terminal devices through Power over Data Line (PoDL)
  • Transmission ranges up to 1000 meters
  • Replaces analog interfaces, bus systems and other proprietary field level systems
  • Ethernet allows continuous communication from the control computer to the sensor
  • Reduced complexity of automation networks
