T1 Single Pair Ethernet EcoSystem

Ralf Klein - Why Standardizing SPE Interface is Critical to Rapid IIoT Deployment

What is the Industrial Ethernet T1 EcoSystem?

The prerequisite for large-scale use in fields such as automation, machinery, robotics or transportation is the consistent compatibility of devices, cables, industrial ethernet switches and connectors. Standardized and uniform interfaces are the key to enabling manufacturers to jointly develop the SPE industrial ethernet EcoSystem consisting of sensors, actuators, controllers and connection technology and to enable users to create suitable automation solutions from these components.

Standard Setting Industrial Ethernet

For industrial and industry-related applications, the HARTING proposal has been adopted by the IEC international standards committee as the mating face. This mating face, based on IEC 63171-6, is specially designed for use in up to M3I3C3E3 environmental conditions and is known as SPE/T1 industrial style. HARTING thus sets the standard for single-pair industrial cabling.

FAQs

What are the benefits of Industrial Ethernet?

  • Speeds of over 1 Gbit/s with Gigabit Ethernet
  • Ability to use ubiquitous Cat5e/Cat6 cables
  • Option to use optical fiber for increased distance
  • Ability to use standard networking hardware for wired and wireless communication
  • Ability to have more than two nodes on link, which was possible with RS-485 but not with RS-232
  • Potential to use peer-to-peer architectures
  • Excellent interoperability

Where can Industrial Ethernet be deployed?

Industrial Ethernet can be integrated into any device that uses data, such as sensors, cameras, switches, etc… Industrial Ethernet can be used in place of fieldbus systems.
