Data Center Infrastructure Solutions

Data center infrastructure is the comprehensive collection of physical and virtual components that support the operation, management, and delivery of services within a data center. This infrastructure includes servers, storage devices, networking equipment, power distribution units (PDUs), cooling systems, and security measures. It also includes components like racks, cabinets, and fire suppression systems. Collectively, these elements work together to ensure reliable performance, scalability, and efficiency, enabling data centers to handle large volumes of data, run applications, and provide services to users and organizations globally.

Get online faster and stay online.

The surge in demand for data centers is largely driven by the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), cloud services, big data analytics, and IoT devices. These new technologies rely heavily on data centers to process and store vast amounts of data.

Predictions suggest that global construction of data centers will nearly double from 2023 to 2033, reaching over $450 billion. Data centers require significant amounts of energy to operate, with estimates suggesting that they currently account for around 2% of global electricity demand and growing.

As the demand for data centers continues to boom, there is a pressing need to develop more sustainable and energy-efficient solutions to power these facilities, including renewable energy sources, space-saving systems, and innovative cooling mechanisms — all while maximizing the power load expected of these facilities.

Enabling these efficiencies are plug-and-play connectors, like those pioneered by HARTING. Connectorization allows for:

  • faster data center construction

  • more reliable connectivity

  • simplified maintenance

  • maximized space usage

  • optimized supply chain management

  • effective environment control

  • among many other efficiencies

Through connectorization, data center builders of all sizes can leverage the efficiencies typically reserved for large-scale data center hyperscalers.

When Microsoft embarked on their open-source, data center infrastructure design initiative Project Olympus, the main challenge they were trying to solve was getting their data centers online faster.

Their rack PDUs took 6-8 weeks to build and source. HARTING helped to develop separate, pre-built rack PDU cable assemblies which can be stored and deployed anywhere in the world within 2 weeks. Microsoft now uses these connectors (theHan-Eco® connector) as their standard to lower lead times and speed installation.

When Open Compute Project heard about our solution, they partnered with us to co-author the standard ORv3 PowerShelf connector. We've maintained this strong partnership for more than a decade.

Data Centers FAQs

Data center infrastructure is the comprehensive collection of physical and virtual components that support the operation, management, and delivery of services within a data center. This infrastructure includes servers, storage devices, networking equipment, power distribution units (PDUs), cooling systems, and security measures. It also includes software solutions for virtualization and cloud management, as well as physical components like racks, cabinets, and fire suppression systems.

Collectively, these elements work together to ensure reliable performance, scalability, and efficiency, enabling data centers to handle large volumes of data, run applications, and provide services to users and organizations globally.

Engineers should consider connectors in data center infrastructure design because they play a vital role in ensuring efficient, reliable, and scalable operations. Connectors facilitate seamless interactions between various components, including servers, storage devices, and networking equipment, enabling smooth data transmission and power distribution.

By selecting high-quality, robust connectors, engineers can minimize installation time, reduce the risk of connection failures, and enhance the overall reliability of the system.

Additionally, connectors allow for modular designs, making it easier to adapt, upgrade, or expand data center infrastructure as technological demands evolve. In an industry where uptime and efficiency are critical, thoughtful connector selection can significantly impact the long-term performance and sustainability of data center operations.

To get data centers online faster, several connectivity solutions can be implemented that streamline installation and enhance operational efficiency. Plug-and-play connectors greatly simplify cabling and power connections, allowing for quick and straightforward setup without extensive manual labor.

Additionally, pre-terminated cabling systems eliminate the need for complex on-site terminations, reducing installation time significantly. Modular power distribution units (PDUs) and busbars provide flexible power distribution options that can be rapidly deployed and easily reconfigured as needed.

Standardized components and connectors enhance compatibility and interoperability among different systems, facilitating faster integrations and minimizing downtime. Collectively, these solutions contribute to quicker deployment and operational readiness, allowing data centers to meet the demands of an increasingly digital landscape.

A hyperscale data center is a large-scale facility designed to efficiently support expansive cloud computing and data processing needs for hyperscale companies, such as major cloud service providers like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.

These data centers are characterized by their high-density infrastructure, which integrates thousands of servers, storage systems, and networking devices within a single location, enabling massive data processing and storage capabilities.

Hyperscale data centers are built with scalability and flexibility in mind, allowing them to quickly expand or adapt to changing workloads and demand. They also employ advanced technologies in power management, cooling systems, and automation to optimize energy efficiency and operational performance, making them essential in supporting the ever-increasing data and processing requirements of modern applications and services.
