“If you can make it there, you’ll make it everywhere”

“If you can make it there, you’ll make it everywhere”

The All Electric Society faces the challenge of ensuring a reliable and efficient energy supply based on renewable sources. A key aspect of this transformation is the demand-oriented storage and distribution of energy. Energy storage is also becoming increasingly important in the railway sector: technologies used in battery- and hydrogen-powered trains enable the efficient use of renewable energies and help to reduce emissions.

Energy storage systems must be implemented across sectors to ensure a stable energy supply in all areas of society. Whether battery storage devices or hydrogen technology, these storage technologies are used in various sectors within the context of the All Electric Society. The major challenge is to ensure that the stored energy can be transmitted reliably.

The railway sector as a pioneer

HARTING has established itself as a pioneer in equipping the railway sector with advanced energy storage systems. Integrating these technologies into the demanding railway sector requires innovative solutions and a deep understanding of the specific tasks involved, due to the high safety requirements and the need for a reliable energy supply.

Based on the principle of "multiplication of application", the company is now able to transfer the knowledge and technologies it has gained in the railway sector to other areas. This opens up new opportunities for implementing sustainable energy solutions in various branches of industry.

Multiplication of Application

HARTING's success in the railway sector serves as a blueprint for other sectors – in line with Frank Sinatra's song "New York, New York" with the line "If you can make it there, you'll make it everywhere". It is clear that those who can survive in the demanding railway environment are also well positioned to meet the challenges of the entire All Electric Society. Such connectivity solutions are also essential in the field of large-capacity energy storage. HARTING offers not only connectors, but also complete plug-and-play connectivity solutions in the form of prefabricated cable assemblies. These integrated solutions contribute significantly to the efficiency and reliability of modern energy storage systems and thus support the transformation to an All Electric Society.

Scalability and modularity

Sector coupling, i.e. the intelligent networking of industrial plants, transport systems and urban infrastructures, requires highly flexible and adaptable energy storage solutions. Scalability and modularity are of crucial importance here: scalability makes it possible to adapt energy storage systems to the different requirements of factories, trains or city districts. Modularity, in turn, acts as an enabler of scalability by allowing rapid setup and expansion to higher performance classes. In this context, HARTING connectors cover a wide range of performance requirements for various applications – e.g. for supplying individual sub-assemblies, mobile work equipment or setting up a stationary supply to replace fossil fuels.

Complete connectivity solutions are created by combining connectors and cables. A prime example of this is the cooperation and strategic partnership with the Swiss company Studer. HARTING and Studer are developing tailor-made solutions for the railway sector to meet the specific requirements of rail transport, such as weight-reduced inter-car jumper solutions:

  • Complete inter-car jumper solutionstailored to your individual requirements

  • Conceptual design & design responsibility for inter-car jumper solutions based on our decades of experience in the railway market

  • Selection of the right componentsin accordance with the latest railway standards, such as termination techniques, cables, mechanical fastenings

  • Individual simulations and tests by our own accredited laboratory

  • Cost reduction & time savingsdue to final approval of inter-car jumper solutions in our independent test laboratory

  • Qualified advice from our global network of experts

  • Development competence centres in Germany with regional production facilities in Europe, the USA, India and China to meet localisation requirements.
