Secure plug-in connections for modular battery storage

The sustainable use of renewable energies such as wind or sun can only be achieved through energy storage modules, since these enable time-delayed, needs-based use. The use of connectors accelerates the build-up of energy storage modules using lithium-ion cells. With its Han® S series, HARTING offers secure connections for modular battery storage systems.

The compact and flexible housings accommodate contacts for currents up to 500A and 2,000V. The series’ bulkhead housings can be flexibly rotated through 360 degrees, and the locking of hoods and housings, male and female contacts is intuitive. The latest version, Han® S 450 Plus, also features waterproof housings and offers optional unlocking protection.

In line with market trends for energy storage systems, Han® S was developed as a front-mount battery connector solution for flexible and secure high-power transmission. The latest development of the single-pole connector series, Han® S 450 Plus, can operate with rated currents of up to 500 A at a voltage of 2,000 V, while ensuring safe installation through finger-safe contacts, visual control of the locking status and various connection types (screw or busbar).

Furthermore, the product is vibration-resistant and suitable for stationary and mobile applications such as electric busses or railway applications. It is available in four different colours (orange, red, black and blue) and includes waterproof (IP67 / IP69K ) housings. It also features a mechanical and colour coding system that prevents incorrect insertion.

Pre-assembled and tested cable assemblies can further speed-up the setup and maintenance of energy storage systems.

There is a orange and a red variant of the Han® S for the positive terminal and a black variant for the negative terminal. Both are also mechanically coded to prevent incorrect insertion. These properties are also beneficial for service and maintenance. The blue version can be used for the neutral terminal.

If a cell in an energy storage module shows a drop in performance, the respective management system can be used to switch it off and have it replaced. To do so, the Han^® S interfaces of the adjacent modules are simply turned aside in the locked state to make room for the switch-out. There is no need to interrupt the energy storage functions of unaffected modules.

Besides holding the UL 4128 certification for “Connectors for use in electrochemical battery systems”, Han® S offers important additional features that were previously unavailable in this segment. As a matter of fact, Han® S guarantees secure and error-free connections with a high degree of flexibility.

A battery management module (BMS) is located in each modular storage module or storage cabinet. These units also need to be connected to form a control train. Here, the HARTING Han® S has added a bulkhead mounted housing with a busbar pin contact. The system is managed via this train and the decentralised BMS transmit status messages to the higher-level system/plant control.
