Han® HPR VarioShell - Highly flexible housing system for inter-car jumpers offers new possibilities

The Han® HPR VarioShell has a streamlined design that protects against environmental impacts such as dirt, ice or pressurised water. Moreover, the IP69 protection rating guarantees its safe outdoor use. New variants increase flexibility of use and open up new possibilities.

Han® 34 HPR VarioShell increases current-carrying capacity of pluggable jumper cables

In combination with single-pole connectors, the Han® HPR VarioShell enables the installation of pluggable jumper cables in the transition area of railway vehicles. At the InnoTrans 2024, HARTING will present its largest VarioShell to date: The Han® 34 size housing offers space for eight single-pole connectors, each with a current carrying capacity of 800 A/3.6 kV.

High currents flow when supplying power to railway vehicles. The live elements in the Han® 34 HPR VarioShell are therefore designed to be safe to touch. Both pin and socket contacts are equipped with insulating plastic elements that prevent contact by the operator.

The Han® 34 HPR VarioShell is shock and vibration resistant, which makes it ideal for railway applications (tested to EN 61373, Cat. 1B). The system is easy to install and the single-pole connectors are easy to maintain, especially as the housing cover can be opened quickly.

Jumper cables with larger cable cross-sections are difficult to install. This is particularly true if multipoles are to be connected. The use of single poles makes handling easier. In the VarioShell, each jumper cable can be connected or disconnected individually, which is a clear advantage for the installer or operator.

“Standardisation, reduced energy consumption and simple handling to save installation time are important trends in the railway industry,” says Product Manager Maik Iphöfer. “With the new Han® HPR VarioShell, a highly flexible housing system has been developed especially for interchange systems, which offers a wealth of possibilities and has already been taken into account in several customer projects due to its advantages.”

Content: The most powerful VarioShell to date for jumper cable solutions: Eight single poles transmit up to 800 A/3.6 kV.

Benefits at a glance:

  • Han® HPR VarioShell 34 enables higher power consumption of applications: Contacts with 800 A are used instead of the previous max. 650 A current rating

  • Han® HPR SP2 protective caps offer protection against mechanical damage when connectors are in an unmated condition

  • High flexibility due to the single poles can also serve as a cable-to-cable solution

  • The VarioShell achieves protection class IP68/69, i.e. suitable for outdoor use

New Han® 24 HPR VarioShell and Han® HPR Compact expand combination options for signal & data transmission through jumper cables

With a new version of the Han® 24 HPR VarioShell, HARTING is opening up additional design options for users of this space-saving jumper cable solution, which optimally protects connections against environmental impacts outside of trains.

Four Han® 24 HPR Compact bulkhead-mounted housings can be screwed onto the new Han® 24 HPR VarioShell. The bulkhead-mounted housings can be flexibly combined with components from the Han-Modular® connector portfolio or with multi-pole monoblocks, e.g. from the Han® D, DD... and Han® E, EE ... series.

The number of possible combinations of connector types, male and female contact inserts, as well as different termination technologies within one interface is increased. The housings can be fitted with coding pins to secure a mix-up-free mating process. Therefore, the new Han® 24 HPR VarioShell enhances flexibility and ensures future-proof interface solutions.

Benefits at a glance:

  • Increased flexibility thanks to new connection options for the Han® 24 HPR VarioShell

  • Mix-up free mating processes due to integrated coding pins within Han® HPR Compact interfaces

  • Cost savings due to minimum inventory needed to reach highest flexibility
