Natural resources are essential for human life. In recent decades, there has been a tremendous change over the energy infrastructure due to the limited availability of coal, oil and natural gas. As an alternative and in addition to nuclear power, renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and biomass have been further developed on a large scale around the world.

Evolution of modular energy storage systems

Electricity storage technologies already have a long history. In particular, the first common technologies such as lead accumulators and lead batteries have proved to be very bulky and harmful to the environment. Therefore, they are not suitable for future-oriented applications.

In recent years, energy storage technology has made significant progress in research and application. A good example is the development of lithium-ion accumulators. They are more environmentally friendly and less cumbersome, if compared to lead accumulators. The new technology enables a wider distribution of energy storage systems with large capacities.

The new connector series offers users optimum safety, as the design meets all technical requirements and the new UL 4128 standard for stationary energy storage systems. HARTING's Han® S series provides safe connection technology for modular battery storage systems. The Han® S is a connector solution for front mounting energy storage modules. For such cases, the connectors can be delivered pre-assembled with the cables, depending on customer specifications.

Heavy-duty connectors can contribute to the efficient establishment of power plants as well as of energy storage or electric power transmission systems. Among the advantages of connectors are quick exchange options in service cases, e.g. for measuring equipment. 
In addition, pretested cable assemblies can provide for a faster installation. In addition, smart inside-cabinet interfaces connecting switchgears to cabinets, or cabinets to cabinets increase efficiency.
However, connectors are not always easy to use in the environment of energy systems, especially, where no direct view is possible or access is restricted. For such environments, HARTING has developed accessories that guide both sides of a connector into the right position for "blind" or "automatic" mating.

The energy transition is well underway and has arrived in all industry segments. Numerous new technologies are being developed which present companies with the challenge of transmitting high currents safely and efficiently. With the Han® HPR HPTC, HARTING offers durable interfaces for high currents in energy applications. As simple and safe as possible. The connectors of the series are characterised by a high energy density: they are designed for operating voltages up to 4.4 kV/1400A (AC/DC) and can withstand environmental influences such as salt spray, dirt and high humidity (IP 68/69). The interface components are designed to be extremely robust so that power transmission between generators, converters and transformers remains stable in the long term.

Han M, Han HPR, Han B house & hood

Han® industrial connectors with a metal hood or housing are especially well suited for environments requiring high levels of component robustness and the simplest possible installation. However, until now, assembly required the cable to first be fed through an opening in the control cabinet so that the inserts could be assembled outside the cabinet and then pulled back into the bulkhead mounted housing. The new Han® solutions are different: They allow for prefabricated inserts to be locked in place directly in the bulkhead mounted housing – from the inside of the control cabinet.
