Tom: My update

I am currently the CAD Technician and Technical Support apprentice looking to grow and develop my career in Engineering. This blog series aims to take you through my journey by sharing my experiences at HARTING.

Having finished my VRQ Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Technology in July, I am now in the process of completing my NVQ and I’m due to finish my Apprenticeship in October. On top of that, in September I started a HNC in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Northampton. I really appreciate the support from HARTING, allowing me to continue in education and further my learning.

Nearly three years after starting my apprenticeship, I have learnt and grown so much. I have been able to get experience in a working environment alongside studying, allowing me to learn both practically and theoretically. Having the opportunity to assist on customer visits and help carry out product training with external customers and distributors has allowed me to grow my confidence, product knowledge as well as learning new skills.

The highlight of my apprenticeship has been meeting new people. I had the chance to meet people through college, university and work, which has contributed to my confidence when speaking to customers due to their continuous help and support.

Since beginning my apprenticeship in 2015 I haven’t looked back, this was definitely the best option for me. I have had so many opportunities and have been supported by HARTING the whole way, allowing me to fulfil my best potential. My proudest moment this year was being asked to give a speech and present awards at the NITAL award ceremony.

Speaking about my apprenticeship journey so far made me realise how far I have come. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to anybody who wants a more hands-on, practical way of learning, it’s the best decision I have made.

My apprenticeship journey with NITAL has ended after 3 years. I was recently given the NITAL award as a recognition of achievement because I was one of the top performers in my class.

My portfolio contributed to this achievement, it consisted of my work experience at HARTING as it was used as evidence to prove my competencies and capabilities!
