RJ45 Connector Solutions

The RJ45 connector (Registered Jack 45) was first standardised for use in 1987. It was originally used for linking telephone networks, but the rise of computer technology saw it repurposed as a standardised method for connecting modems to networks. Today, the RJ45 is primarily used to link equipment together or to centrally connect equipment.

An RJ45 connector consists of a male RJ45 plug on one end and a female RJ45 socket on the other. The RJ45 plug is generally connected to an Ethernet cable, while the RJ45 socket is usually installed on a device or wall outlet.

HARTING has been a leading supplier of industrial connectivity technology for over 75 years. The technology group is highly skilled at developing innovations which provide simple yet reliable solutions. So read on to learn more about HARTING’s range of RJ45 connector products, including RJ45 crimping tools, RJ45 cable assemblies and robust, space-saving solutions for harsh industrial environments.

RJ Industrial® MultiFeature

The RJ45 is the world’s most widely used connector and is synonymous with Ethernet connections in the IP20 environment. However, the RJ45’s plastic locking tabs can be easily broken in busy manufacturing environments, which can lead to contact problems as the connection works loose.

As a result, HARTING created the RJ Industrial® series, which is designed to meet all the requirements and challenges of a harsh operating environment. It can be assembled in the field without any special tools and is available with a hybrid interface, which combines data and power in one connector and cable, saving 50% installation space.

The RJ Industrial® Multifeature is an RJ45 connector with integrated cutting tools for fast and easy assembly. There is no need to trim individual wires as the integrated cutter shortens them in exactly the right spot, ensuring a high-quality connection and saving 25% installation time.

RJ45 Cable Assemblies

The HARTING Customised Solutions facility in Northampton produces high-quality cable assemblies, inter-car jumpers and box builds. Other capabilities, including testing, crimping and assembly work. Our team will work with you to design and manufacture custom RJ45 cable assemblies which meet your exact requirements.

RJ45 cable assemblies are ideal for transmitting high data rates in industrial environments. Options include a choice of custom cable lengths and PushPull connection technology, which is the perfect solution for space-limited installations. HARTING also offer the VarioBoot® RJ45, which lets you reroute cable lines without interference or transmission loss. They provide Cat6A, 10Gbit/s transmission performance and feature an RJ45 connector with 20 different angle adjustments and bend directions, meaning a perfect fit inside electrical enclosures and control cabinets.

HA-VIS preLink® RJ45

For faster, more reliable RJ45 cable assembly repairs, look no further than the Ha-VIS preLink® system. It can be wired with total safety in one step using our preLink ® RJ45 crimping tool, ensuring a reliable cabling connection. The termination blocks can also be supplied to custom lengths as pre-assembled single or double-ended patch leads, making them simple to install through existing cable trays or conduits.

RJ45 crimping tools

HARTING offers a comprehensive range of RJ45 crimping tools to cover all termination techniques and assembly steps. From simple manual assembly and disassembly tools to semi-automatic hand tools, you’re certain to find the right solution.

HARTING VarioBoot® RJ45

Varioboot® RJ45

The Varioboot® RJ45 connectors offers great flexibility by allowing you to control the orientation and angle of your RJ45 connection. This ensures an ideal fit inside a control cabinet or electrical enclosure. Whatever the cable routing, the Varioboot® Rj45 is adaptable for any direction without transmission loss or interference.

This level of flexibility is ideal because the path the Cat. 6A line takes, such as through a control cabinet can be decided at the end. A pull and a click in the required direction is that’s needed for a flexible and robust ethernet connection.

One of the key benefits of the Varioboot® RJ45 is the low weight, here is a list of other key features of this ethernet connector:

  • Patch cord routing in cabinets and devices is easy thanks to the ability to adjust the orientation of the connector.
  • Future-proof RJ45 solution, especially for applications that requires a lot of bandwidth. The Varioboot® RJ45 can achieve 10 Gbit/s.

Applications for the Varioboot® RJ45 connector:

  • Control Cabinets
  • Electrical Enclosures
  • Ethernet Patch Panels
  • Automation, Machinery, Robotics, and Wind Applications

Specifications of the Varioboot RJ45 connector:

  • IP 20 protection rating
  • Cat. 6A, 10Gbit/s transmission performance
  • Yellow PUR halogen-free, oil resistant cable jacket
  • 1 to 1 wiring with 4x2 twisted pair wires
  • Operating temperature:  -30C to +75C
  • Direction of RJ45 connector can be adjusted up to 20 times
  • Bend direction can be adjusted from left/right to up/down

Han-Modular®

The HARTING Han-Modular® range offers the RJ45 module, enabling you to transmit ethernet in robust hoods and housings with IP65/IP67 rating.

The Han-Modular® is a connector series you can design specifically for your application by combining individual modules for different transmissions. Signal, data, power and compressed air can be combined into one industrial connector.

HARTING has taken a step further with the Han® Configurator, enabling you to design your ideal industrial connector with a few clicks.

Benefits of Han-Modular®:

  • Integration of multiple connectors into a single unit
  • Shorter installation times
  • Significant reduction in space requirements
  • Cost savings on components and the entire system
  • Future-proof thanks to flexible enhancements

PushPull RJ45

PushPull connectors are designed so an engineer can quickly connect & disconnect their equipment, reducing downtimes and increasing installation speed. PushPull offers secure and robust connection without tools, due to its internal locking mechanism.

The PushPull connector makes mating and un-mating simple, even for outdoors and hard-to-reach locations. With an audible click, the engineer will know the connection is made.

We offer PushPull RJ45 in Cat.5 and Cat.6e with tool less IDC or piecing contacts.

Benefits of PushPull:

  • Easy to connect / disconnect
  • Higher space density with internal locking mechanism
  • Corrosion resistant hoods and housings.

Features of PushPull RJ45

ix Industrial®

The ix Industrial® is an ideal alternative to the RJ45 connector with the added benefit of being 70% smaller. It is an industry standard according to IEC 61076-3-124; the ix Industrial® is also a reliable interface for device manufacturers.

The ix Industrial is robust, compared to the typical RJ45 connector because of its metal snap-in hooks. This solves the issue of the plastic tab snapping on the RJ45 plug, which leads to occasional contact problems. The ix Industrial also offers high EMC immunity and is shock & vibration resistant according to EN 50 155 railway specifications. These features make the ix Industrial a perfect alternative to the RJ45, particularly in industrial environments.
