HARTING focuses on sustainability

Saving resources with SPE Single Pair Ethernet/ 1Gbit/s SPE over more than 90 metres, HARTING and Belden show live at HM23 what is technically feasible/ First SPE product database online/ Ethernet connections in Hyperloop/ Presentation of the Operator Interfaces product family

Ecological thinking and economic management are fundamental principles of the HARTING Technology Group. Nevertheless, the topics of sustainability and environmental protection have once again come into sharper focus in recent years. This applies to internal company processes, but also to the development of connectivity that saves resources. With Single Pair Ethernet, the HARTING Technology Group offers a powerful infrastructure for the implementation of the IIoT. At the same time, it conserves resources.

Sustainable networks

Sustainability is the central topic of our time. It is our task to protect our planet with new technologies. Single Pair Ethernet enables high-performance Ethernet data transmission over only one pair of copper wires. SPE thus makes a decisive contribution to sustainable industrial networks.

The expansion of data networks goes hand in hand with the implementation of IIoT. This additional infrastructure must be designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible. SPE is an indispensable technology for achieving this goal. It would mean immense material costs if every BUS line had to be replaced by four- or eight-core Ethernet cables. Single pair Ethernet solves this task with a fraction of the necessary resources. Depending on the reference cable, SPE technology can save up to 50% copper and weight, up to 25% space and about 1/3 in plastics in the Ethernet infrastructure.

HARTING and Belden Hirschmann demonstrate live video transmission via 1Gbit/s SPE over 90 metres

A transmission rate of 1Gbit/s via SPE is currently standardised in IEEE802.3bp and limited to 40 metres. The usual transmission length for Ethernet is currently 100 metres. Due to its origins in the automobile, the distances for SPE are currently still oriented towards vehicle-typical lengths. Working groups in standardisation, as well as infrastructure providers, are currently investigating where the technically reliable limits in transmission length lie. The HARTING Technology Group and Belden Hirschmann will be demonstrating a live video transmission via 1Gbit/s SPE over 90 metres in Hall 11, Stand C15 at Hannover Messe 2023. This distance has been successfully tested with currently available components under optimal conditions. Of course, it is necessary to verify the distances under operational conditions. However, the test setup should show that the technical potential of SPE is much higher than currently specified in the standard. The aim is to make the technology suitable for 1 Gbit/s SPE over a distance of 100 metres and also to specify it in IEEE 802.3.

First SPE product database online

The market for Single Pair Ethernet network technology is growing. To give users an overview of all currently available components, the SPE Industrial Partner Network offers the world's first database for SPE products. From several hundred listed items, developers can select everything they need for prototype development or series production.

"The common database for SPE products, now from 60 leading international companies, offers developers and planners all the necessary components for Single Pair Ethernet from a single source. This means that SPE development projects gain momentum and can be implemented more quickly. We are once again setting a milestone on the road to the IoT with the world's first database for SPE products. With our membership in the SPE Industrial Partner Network and the propagation of the technology, we continue to follow our HARTING vision - to create technologies for people", explains Ralf Klein, Managing Director HARTING Electronics GmbH.

Live in Hanover - Ethernet connections in the Hyperloop

Swissloop is a student association at ETH Zurich whose mission is to research the Hyperloop technology. Every year, a new team of students from various Swiss universities construct a new pod. The pod is a vehicle that travels at high speed in a vacuum tube. The aim is to explore the technical possibilities of future transport systems. Live in Hanover, HARTING and Swissloop will be showing the Lavinia Heisenberg pod from 2022. For this, the HARTING Technology Group supplied the space-saving Ethernet connection with the ix Industrial®.

New in the programme: Operator Interfaces

At the Hanover Fair, the Technology Group presents the new Operator Interfaces product family. The operating and command devices are available as status lights, push buttons, key switches, selector switches and emergency stop switches. All models are designed for installation in enclosures and are divided into two sizes. The size for an enclosure cut-out with diameter 22.3 mm is recommended for applications in automation, machinery and robotics. The 30.5 mm diameter is suitable for transportation applications.
