Single-Pair-Ethernet (SPE) is a technology that enables Ethernet communication via single pairs of symmetric copper wires. This happens at a speed of 10 Mbit/s up to 1 Gbit/s. At the same time, the power for the supply of end devices can be transmitted through the same pair of wires. This technology is named Power over Data Line (PoDL). The SPE standard enables an error-free transmission through cables up to 1000 m, which is a key criterion for use in process automation.
SPE offers three essential benefits:
- It saves space and weight, simplifies the cabling and reduces installation time.
- In combination with PoDL it eliminates the need for separate power cabling and supply, reducing the risk of failure.
- By combining these benefits with the increased transmission reach (up to 1000 m), Single-Pair-Ethernet offers an optimal connection for end devices that require data and power supply.
Due to the use of standard Ethernet, the technology suits all Industry 4.0 applications where end devices need to be connected individually to a company’s manufacturing network.
